The River
One Day As I Was Standing,
Watching A Mighty River Flow.
I Watched The Water Coming,
And Also Watched It Go.
Then Suddenly I Felt A Twinge,
A Certain Kind Of Shiver.
As I Realized In Deepest Thought,
My Life Is Like That River.
I'd Started Out So Placid,
From Somewhere Up On High.
But Very Soon I Picked Up Speed,
As The Years Went Flashing By.
At Times, My Life Was Tranquil,
My Peace It Seemed To Keep.
And Spread To Cover All I Could,
Still Waters Running Deep.
And Then Without Prior Warning,
Was Forced To Pick Up Pace.
As All Around Me Narrowed,
To Keep Up, I Had To Race.
Things Soon Became So Turbulent,
It Hit Me Like A Shock.
As I Watched My Life Just Tumble,
Like Water On The Rocks.
Somewhere In The Distance,
I Could Hear The Waters Call.
I Fall And Then I Stumble,
Down Like A Waterfall.
But Neither Could We Sit There,
Or In Turbulent Waters Set.
Neither That Mighty River,
Nor My Life's Done As Yet.
Then I See The Water,
Flowing Onwards To The Sea.
And Have To Stop And Just Ask Out Loud,
Where Are The Waters Taking Me.
We Both Flow Along So Silent,
Round Many Of Life's Bends.
Flowing Ever Constant,
Towards Our Inevitable End.
For Sometime Will Come The Moment,
When The River Flows No More.
But Becomes Part Of The Ocean,
And I Join The Sandy Shore.
It May Be A Long, Long River,
Or Merely Just A Stream.
So It Is With Our Own Lives,
We Leave Marks Where We Have Been.
So As That River's Waters,
Disappear Into The Tide.
So We Too One Day Must Leave This Earth,
And Join Others Who Now Hide.
We'll See Again Our Loved Ones,
Who Once Did Like Waters Flow.
But This Time Will Be Forever.
There'll Be No Tiring Loads.
But To Reach That Destination,
We Must Do What Is Our Best.
Flow Through Life Like A River,
And Pass All Of Life's Tests
